The "Beaches" and on to Oakville
As I write am in the Oakville library. Very nice folks here (translated, that means they let me bring my bike inside where I can keep an eye on it!) No USB again! Spent most of yesterday navigating the streets and bikeways of greater Toronto. I've found getting into Toronto from the east is a challenge, getting out this morning from the west was a snap and very, very lovely.
After many miscues and much slow going riding on sidewalks (a lot), pushing the bike (a little) and trying to follow bike trails in parks that all seemed to turn to dirt or dead end, I made it to Queen Street, a very tony section of town. Numerous bike shops, coffee shops on every corner, trendy clothiers, sidewalk cafes, wonderful fresh food stores, even a Ben and Jerry's. I didn't want to eat alone in a restaurant so I bought an apple, banana, carrot/ginseng (for the memory cells, you know), bread, yogurt, and salted cashews and had a scrumptious picnic in Kew Park. Kew is home to a jazz festival later this month and has beautifully landscaped grounds, flowers galore, pesky pigeons, a ball field, play ground and much, much more. This section is called the Beaches with most of the commercial activity along Queen Street. I stayed the night a couple of blocks off Queen at Enid's B and B. Enid is English, about 70 I'd say, and as whacky as clay is dirt (now where did that come from?--too much ginseng!) I have pictures of the interior you wouldn't believe. Like something out of Alice in Wonderland. Unfortunately Enid forgot to give me towels, there was no drinking glass, the shower was painted totally black, and the cold water didn't work. Ouch, that shower was a scorcher!
Libraries. What treasures! Arriving, I stopped at the Taylor Library about 10 blocks from Enid's to inquire about accomodations, having seen none on my many hours of pedaling into Toronto. They in turn called the Beaches Library where I was headed anyway and told them I'd be coming. When I got there, the librarian had downloaded descriptions of 5-6 possibilities for accomodations and gave me directions and an information booklet about the area. Unfortunatley, Enid's page was on top and I was not very thorough. Well, so it goes.
It's getting on 2:30 in the afternoon. Will head to Burlington (not Vermont!) and will be at the head of the lake. Weather is beautiful. I have tons of pictures that I will make into a slide show. Right Corinne? Betsy, what's the picture capacity of the 2 memory sticks in the pouch? Help, I need a technical advisor!
Hi Kyle! Be good to your mom. Hi Emily. You get to have all of the blueberries this year. Enjoy. Love to all....Lowell

Mr. Snooty-head: For your information mister smartypants the cold water most certainly worked! YOU, mister spandexpants couldn't figure it out! And now you have slandered my bed and breakfast across the planet. I am 70 years old and this is my only source of income. I am perturbed sir. Please come clean (as it were) and tell the world: "My Bad! Enid's cool."
Enid
PS: The black paint in the shower stall is quite practical young man. It nicely obscures the slimy trail of the giant slugs that make their home in the drain.

Lowell...aka "snooty head, smarty pants, mister spandexpants (the last being my personal favorite...and had me chuckling all day) you should probably tell Enid that you meant wacky in that funny positive way that you use that word as in "oh those wacky little first graders are so cute" or "that wacky little dog, Louie, just pooped on the rug". And now that I know how to get rid of those nasty slime trails that the slugs leave behind our bathrooms will be painted black upon your return (thanks Enid). Keep on riding and I'm glad you have decided that camping in your tent might be the way to go for awhile. Love you mister spandexpants. Betsy

Hey Lowell not only is Betsy painting showers black but she has a new black dog she has been parading around the neighborhood! Hmmmm, must be your replacement until you get back!!! Actually it was a stray that she was trying to find it's home! Wonder if I put a collar around Bob's neck if she will try to find him a home as well!!! Glad to hear you are still doing well and having great adventures. Thanks for sharing!

Most libraries probably don't have USB ports for security reasons, so you may need to think of a work-around for the whole trip. One might be to find a place that can burn you CDs with the photos on them (good idea to back-up anyway). Try a camera shop that does digital photos or maybe a computer store.
Of course, this is dependent on the libraries having CD drives in their computers - but that seems more likely than them having USB.
If that doesn't work, try asking for access to a computer with broadband Internet at other community places like churches, schools, etc.

Heh Lowell, wondering where in the world you are today! John went to RI this weekend for the first time since he became ill. Sarah is working today at Vaughns - expecting a big crowd to watch the World Cup. Love you big brother!
Oh, John said you might look at at the back of the computer for a USB port. Sometime older computer have them there. Jane

Hi Boss!
Glad to hear you're enjoying the view! (Except the black, scorching, snail-infested shower stall! Yikes!) It sounds like you should write a guidebook to public libraries. They sound wonderful. I do hope you have a book planned after this whole adventure. It would no doubt be a hit. Be well.

Hey Lowell, sounds like quite an adventure. Camille and I are here in MI. We'd love to meet you on the western shores of Michigan. Call us when you are within a day of us.
Watch out for the road hogs of MI, they are vicious.

Hey there Mr. Spandexpants - now that one will stick (kind of like HPC!) I love reading your adventures along the way and am finding myself falling in love with characters like Enid!!! Gotta love those tough women - not enough of us around.
I don't have exact details, but I do know that I had two very disappointed buys at my house last night with the Red Sox. I do know they lost in a very intense 15 inning game - sorry!! Before that they have been winning. I am sure you want more details than that and I will try to get them to pass along. Maybe you have even been following???
Incredible weekend in VT - hoping for one just like that next weekend for the Schober Palooza! Both kids and their counterparts will be home on Thursday for almost a week. I am just cranking out orders for next year (finally) and then outta here on Wednesday for a week - about time.
Miss you alot (lord I hate to admit that), but we are all good. Had the last invasive test today and no need for surgery so I am very grateful. No 6 weeks off for this gal.
Take care - ride safely - continue to love what you are doing.
Love - Cally (HPC - did the ginseng help you remember this nickname???)

hello everyone....Lowell asked me to let all of you know that he is fine...making good time and having a great time. He has not been able to get to a computer, however, he thinks he will tomorrow so we can all read about his adventures. He has attended family reunions, been entertained at "midwestern" diners, and even hitchhiked across the canadian/us border when they wouldn't allow him to bike across....thanks truckers. He is back in the states, spending tonight camped out in a KOA in Capac Michigan. He sends his love to all. Betsy
